The Length Guide: Choosing Midi Dresses and Wide-Leg Pants for Your Height

The Length Guide: Choosing Midi Dresses and Wide-Leg Pants for Your Height - Shop Rust & Ruffles

Ask a room of boho dressers what makes or breaks a look, and the answer is rarely the print. It is the length. A wide-leg pant that pools at the ankle, a midi that cuts the calf at its widest point: both are fixable once you know where a hem should land on you.

Height is a starting point, not a verdict. Proportions, shoes, and fabric all have a say. Here is how to think about length for petite, average, and tall frames.

Where should a wide-leg hem land?

For a full-length wide leg, aim for a hem that clears the floor by roughly a quarter to one inch in the shoes you plan to wear, skimming the top of the shoe so the leg line runs unbroken from hip to floor. A cropped wide leg is a different story on purpose: it ends at or above the ankle and reads as intentional.

There is no single magic number, because sole height, drape, and cut all shift where a hem falls. One tailor's trick worth borrowing: hem to your flattest everyday shoe, so the pair still works when you reach for a heel. Before committing, fold the hem up with a few safety pins and take a walk around the house.

When you are ready to put the rule to work, our statement pants are made for exactly this kind of swish.

Should petite shoppers prioritize a shorter inseam and rise?

Yes, and both matter. A petite cut is not simply a regular pair with the hem taken up; it pairs a shorter inseam with a shorter rise, so the waistband sits where it should and the leg breaks in the right place. Hemming can fix length, but it cannot move a rise.

Two shoppers of the same height can have very different leg lengths, so shop by your measurements rather than your height. In petite fit communities, full-length inseams around 25 to 28 inches and rises around 9 to 10.5 inches come up often. Treat those as reference points, not rules, and measure a pair you already love to find yours.

Midi dress length, by height

  • Petite (under about 5'4"): a standard midi often slides toward the ankle. Look for a shorter midi that ends just below the knee or at the narrowest part of the calf, with a defined waist to lengthen the line.
  • Average (about 5'4" to 5'7"): the sweet spot. Most midis land at their intended mid-calf point, so choose by silhouette and fabric.
  • Tall (5'8" and up): many off-the-rack midis, often 41 to 45 inches long, will read as just below the knee. Seek out longer cuts if you want a true mid-calf drop.

Our midi dresses span fluid, leg-lengthening silhouettes across the range.

Measure once, shop smart

  • For dresses, measure from the base of your neck down your spine to where you want the hem. Compare that number to the listed garment length.
  • For pants, know your inseam and your preferred rise.
  • Check the model's height on the product page, then do the shoe test: walk, sit, and see where the hem settles.

Length done well is quiet. Nothing tugs, nothing puddles, and the print gets to be the point.
